About the Group

In January 2019, four string players recognized the void of a regularly performing string quartet in the Jamaican classical music scene. They came together in attempt to fill that void with their own ensemble. This ensemble became known as the Accel String Quartet, short for 'accelerando' or gradually faster. It is indeed the perfect musical direction to describe the group's increase in popularity, as it has become one of the most widely sought after groups in Jamaica.

Accel was founded with the promise of performing live music to the highest standard. It is one of the premiere chamber groups in Jamaica and aims to spread music of varying genres throughout Jamaica and eventually at the international level. The group performs regularly at weddings and corporate events, and has been a participant at the annual "Classics in June" event, a staple of the Jamaican classical recital calendar. Accel also hosted their debut concert "Reflections in November" in 2019 and received extremely positive reviews from patrons in attendance.

The founding members comprised of members of the National Youth Orchestra of Jamaica program, consisting of a mix of alumni and instructors. The standard has not fallen over the years since, rather it has only grown to greater strengths and the group is currently comprised of seasoned professionals of a world class standard who have performed not only with local prestigious orchestras and ensembles, but also on the international stage.

Works performed include traditional string quartet composers such as Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Haydn. More contemporary works such as Piazolla are also performed regularly. Popular music hits such as Despacito, and from artists such as Coldplay and Michael Jackson have a place in the repertoire, as well as iconic local reggae ballads from Bob Marley and others, as well as commissioned works for the group, or pieces written by the group itself, with several arrangements and compositions being done by Kamoy Gordon and Gabriel Walters.

Alex Lawson Viola

Alex Lawson is a violist from Kingston, Jamaica. Unlike most classical musicians, his journey began relatively late at the age of 14 with the piano, before he switched to violin before deciding on the viola. He credits his love of classical music to a performance of the third movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata by Daniel Barenboim. He was immediately transfixed and adopted the motto that if he [Barenboim] could do it then so could Alex. From then on music became a part of who he was.

He is a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Jamaica as well as the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica, and an honorary member of the Immaculate Conception High School Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed abroad, taking part in the Luzerne Summer Music Festival held in New York for two years.

His teachers include the likes of Steven Woodham, Paulette Bellamy, Peter Ashbourne and Darren Young. He has had masterclasses with Sovon Kim, and CJ Chang, Principal Violist with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Besides music, Alex is also a physiotherapist and a recent graduate from the University of the West Indies.
